Trade winds always present in Venezuelan coasts and islands are predominant in Los Roques from December to July. These winds usually blow towards the northeast with an average speed of 15 knots. From June to November (time of hurricanes up north) trade winds decrease in strength to less than 10 knots and usually blow south – east. During the month of August a complete calm takes place known as the (Calma chichi) in rare occasions do winds blow from the opposite direction (west). A constant feature of these winds is that they create new Islands and in these last years -changing the shape og the Gran Roque Island !!
